Larkhall Thistle FC » Port Glasgow https://larkhallthistle.co.uk Mon, 09 Dec 2013 00:07:02 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Gow win takes promotion out of Thistle’s hands https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/gow-win-takes-promotion-out-of-thistles-hands/ https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/gow-win-takes-promotion-out-of-thistles-hands/#comments Mon, 27 May 2013 22:32:35 +0000 ian https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/?p=1357 Lesmahagow beat Benburb 4-1 tonight to set up a final day in the league that promises to be tension packed and nail-biting to say the least. Thistle take on Port Glasgow at home on Saturday, while at the same time phones will be pointed to Craighead to see how the Gow are doing in their final game at home to Dunipace.

Unfortunately the situation is now out of the Jags hands, if Lesmahagow win they go up – it is now as simple as that. If they don’t win and Thistle do win then the Jags are promoted. If neither team wins the league’s form team Shettleston go up thanks to their late surge which has seen them shoot up the standings to second place.

St Anthony’s have played all their games and are five points in front so only two wins would see us overtake them. Even then the Jags would not be assured of promotion  as Lesmahagow could overtake us.

The big park at Parklea suited Thistle last time and we go there with happy memories of the best result of the season, a remarkable 5-0 win against champions-elect Greenock. Nobody is expecting a repeat of that scoreline today, the Port are still in there fighting to stay in the division and will be giving it there all in both games so anything won today will need to be hard-earned.

Match Preview: Larkhall Thistle v Port Glasgow https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/match-preview-larkhall-thistle-v-port-glasgow/ https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/match-preview-larkhall-thistle-v-port-glasgow/#comments Fri, 22 Feb 2013 17:14:34 +0000 ian https://larkhallthistle.co.uk/?p=911 This is our first meeting of the season with Port Glasgow due to postponements but most people connected with the Jags will have fond memories of last seasons encounters between the teams. Thistle won the first game 3-1 in October 2011 but the real drama came in May in our last game of the season when Thistle had to win to avoid relegation. They travelled to Greenock on a Friday night and put up one of their best showings of the season, running out 4-1 winners.

This is a vital game for both teams and one which both need to win for different reasons. Thistle lost ground to Lanark and St Anthony’s who both had good wins last week, so they need the win to stay up with the promotion contenders. Any slip-ups now could see any of several teams overtaking the Jags and us slipping back towards mid table. The Jags were knocked out of the last remaining cup competetion of the season last Saturday so all the focus is now on the remaining 11 league games.

Port Glasgow need the win to pull clear of the relegation spots. They made a bit of a disappointing start to life at their new stadium and are currently sitting third bottom of the league but their form has picked up recently and they’ve won two and drawn one of their last four games including a surprise win at St Anthony’s.

Port Glasgow have been having a tough time of it this season but as we have found out there are no easy fixtures in this league and today once again we will be expecting a hard game.

22nd December 2012
Central District First Division

We go into this game in a healthier position in the league than we have been for some time, sitting third equal with Carluke with the same number of games played. After having completed the double against St Anthony’s last time out we were hoping to build on that momentum and pick up a few more points but once again we have had another frustrating spell of bad weather which has seen the team idle for the last three Saturdays. With the weather taking its toll on fixtures throughout the Central region in the last few weeks it is a minor victory in itself just to get the game on today and raise some much needed revenue for the club.

Thistle’s back to back wins against St Anthony’s and St Roch’s brought the terrible run of six defeats in a row to an end and saw us move back up towards the right end of the league table. We had of course been badly hampered by a fixture list that saw us play four consecutive away league games, as well as an away Scottish Cup tie at Super Premier League side Cumnock. The only home game during that run was the 5-3 loss in the West of Scotland Cup to Rutherglen Glencairn, also a league above us.

Port Glasgow have made a bit of a disappointing start to life at their new stadium and are currently sitting second bottom of the league with seven points, having lost seven out of their ten games, with wins only against Dunipace and Shettleston. The Port have been having a tough time of it this season but as we have found out there are no easy fixtures in this league and today once again we will be expecting a hard game.
